On the mend!

We've been a little under the weather around here for the last few weeks, but the sun seems to be coming out finally! :-)  Trey got quite a nasty respiratory virus/ear infection combo right after his birthday party, and after going this morning to our third doctor appointment, it seems like he's finally on the mend.  He had been battling some congestion, but he developed a nasty sounding cough and started running a low-grade fever, so the poor guy got to spend the morning of his birthday at the doctor's office.  He tested negative for RSV thankfully, but he had a bad ear infection in his right ear and got a prescription for Zithromax.  We stuck it out through the five days of antibiotics, even though he threw up almost every night. :-(  He took the antibiotics with his lunch but got sick after dinner 4 of the 5 nights he took it, poor fella.  And poor momma.  Steve worked late all but one of those nights, so I was left to clean up the baby, myself, and the carpet...not too fun!  Fortunately he would be fine after he got sick, so I'd generally try to get some applesauce or something in his tummy before bed.

He continued to battle a terrible sounding cough and a ton of congestion and landed back at the doctor last Thursday after waking up in the middle of the night with a 102.6 fever.  His right ear looked much better, but his left ear had somehow developed a bad infection, even though he'd been on Zithromax.  This time we got Cefdinir.  They tried Cedax first, but that was going to be $170 AFTER insurance...wow!  Thankfully the Cefdinir was much cheaper and seems to be working well.  Last Friday was pretty sad around here.  We watched a lot of Sesame Street, and Trey just snuggled with me on the couch.  He did NOT feel good!

At his checkup this morning, his right ear looks good, and the doctor said his left ear looks 50-60% better.  We also took care of his 12 month checkup, sans vaccines for now, and almost everything looked good there, too.  They do want us to come back in two weeks from now to check his ears again, but they also want to monitor his weight.  He's only in the 5th percentile for weight and has lost quite a bit since he's been sick, so we're working on getting a little meat on those bones! :-)

Here are the last few weigh ins:
November - 19 pounds 9 ounces
2/16/12 - 19 pounds 14 ounces
2/23/12 - 19 pounds 7 ounces
2/27/12 - 19 pounds 13 ounces

Poor guy is having a rough time!  I'm sure part of that is the fact that he does not stop moving, but his appetite has definitely been down with all these sickies.  He munched on some shells with cheese and a clementine for lunch today though and has downed quite a bit of milk from his new straw cup.  We'll try out a Pediasure shake after dinner and see if we can start getting a few more calories in him.

I think this weekend Steve and I may try to go out on a date if Steve's parents can watch Trey.  It's a little overdue considering it will be the first date we've had since before Trey was born.  Yes, it has been over a year since we have gone on a date.  Bad!  I definitely enjoy spending time with Trey, but I am looking forward to a chance to go to dinner with my cute husby!

Happy Birth Day

Wow....how has it been a whole year?  All day long, I've been thinking about where we were this time last year.  My appointment later in the afternoon when my water broke and I got wheeled over to the hospital where my dad came to stay with me until everyone else got there.  Trying to rest.  And delivering the baby boy who made me and Steve a mom and dad.  Looking back, it doesn't seem like it took very long, and really, I guess it didn't.

I looked through the pictures from Trey's first few days with us, and it's funny the things I remember.  Enjoying a week at home with my boys.  The snuggles in the living room.  Watching my hubby snuggle with our bitty baby boy.  Sleeping with Trey on the couch.  The smell of Germ-X (ha!).  Being up in the middle of the night to nurse while I watched Cake Boss and ate granola bars from the basket Steve so lovingly kept filled. :-)  The little canvas baskets where we tried to keep everything orgnized nice and handy in the living room.

It's making me teary sitting here thinking about it all because even though I love watching Trey grow and learn, at the same time, I wish I could just pause time.  I miss those snuggle baby days with that tiny little baby in the footie jammies.

But I also love that now we get drooly baby kisses, that we get to listen to his belly laughs, that we get to see that toothy little grin, that Trey waves bye bye to Daddy in the mornings, that he eats Crunchies like an addict, that he runs to greet Steve when he walks in the door, that he tackles me with books that we'll read ten times in a row before I finally distract him with something else besides Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too?  Every stage has been sweet and hard to let go, but the next one has always been incredible in its own way.

So since I won't be awake (I hope!) to mark the exact time, here is to the moment at 3:06 a.m. on February 16, 2011, when the sweetest baby boy in the world arrived. :-)  We love you, baby!

Trey's First Birthday!

I can't believe my little man turns one this week!  We had his party this past Saturday and really had a great time!  It wasn't anything too fancy...just cupcakes, ice cream, family, and a few friends, but it was perfect.  Trey thought the singing was just too fun but didn't care much for his cupcake.  He flipped it over and inspected it a little before handing it to me.  I don't mind that he's not into sweets. :-)

A few of the guests:

We had a lot of fun opening his presents and enjoyed visiting with our company for a few hours before everyone headed home.  Not surprisingly, Trey was zonked within about ten minutes of everyone leaving.  That was a busy day for such a little guy!

Bulldozer

When you learn the bulldozer game where you crawl around the room with your forehead on the floor, you probably shouldn't keep going when you encounter a piece of furniture.

Dad might have to pretend to be the jaws of life to get you out.

Things that go "achoo!" in the night

A few weeks ago, Trey had his first real cold.  Fever, snot, coughing, sneezing...the whole nine yards. (What does that mean, anyway??)  Although he had been sleeping all night most of the time, this lovely virus woke him up several times a night, meaning I was summoned into his room to rock him back to sleep.  Normally, I wouldn't mind too terribly.  He's only little once, and since I don't have to get up to go to a job, I really kind of enjoy any snuggle time I can get.  However, this cold arrived several days after I decided to bid Ms. Medela a (not so) fond farewell and get Trey fully transitioned over to whole milk, so needless to say, having a sick, sniffling, wallowing twenty pound sack of fussy baby flopping around on my chest was rather torturous.  I felt bad waking Steve up since he DOES have to get up in the morning to go to work, so I decided maybe if I put a blanket on the floor, Trey would lay down beside me and fall asleep.  We got all settled in on our pallet, using the Boppy as our pillow.  His face was about four inches away from mine, and I could feel his warm breath with each exhale (that thankfully no longer included screaming).  As I closed my eyes thinking that maybe I might just possibly get some sleep, he sneezed.  Four inches from my face.  Right in my eye.  Thankfully my eyelid protected the poor thing from the ooze that now covered half my face and had turned the Boppy fabric between us soggy.  I did the only thing a sleep deprived mother could do and laughed as I turned the pillow over so that we had a not so snotty sleeping surface.

After trying this new arrangement out for another ten minutes or so, the screaming had resumed, and it became evident that Trey wasn't going to fall asleep this way.  At this point, I figured Steve had to be at least somewhat awake, and if I was going to be wrestling a fussing baby, I'd do it in the comfort of my own bed.

(Now I must note that Steve and I have agreed from the beginning that we don't want kids in our bed, and I am totally on board with that.  Especially after the few hours when we've had the three of us in there, I realize that it just doesn't work.  But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.  Back to the story.)

Steve was already awake when Trey and I walked in, so I put Trey's Boppy in the middle of the bed and put the boy down between us.  Thankful for a bit of tag team action, I snuggled down in the blanket while Steve patted Trey's back and whispered to him to go to sleep.  Now if I were a nice wife, I would have warned the husband that snuggling up nose to nose with the adorable little sick boy might SEEM nice, but it's not such a good idea. After being up for an hour in the middle of the night, I am apparently not a nice wife.  Minutes after we're all settled in, I hear the familiar sound of a baby sneezing, coating his parent's face with goop, and I hear my dear sweet husband utter a single syllable:

Thanks.

And I dissolved into giggles.  Knowing that my fussy baby boy was FINALLY not crying anymore, realizing that my laughter could quite possibly disturb this newfound quiet...I could not help myself!  Every time I thought I had regained control of myself, I'd start laughing again, making it evident that we don't have one of those mattresses that you can drop the bowling bowl on and not knock over the glass of wine. We did all doze off finally, and after moving Trey back to his own bed, everyone slept happily ever after.  The end. :-)
