30 weeks!
Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 30 weeks
Size of baby: Head of cabbage. Around 15.7 inches long and almost 3 pounds.
Maternity Clothes: Loving them! In the evenings, I usually just wear sweats or pj pants and Steve's shirts. :-)
Gender: BOY!
Movement: Lots of fidgiting. He can't really move any more without me feeling him, and I love it! He was moving so much at lunch today that the other people at the table could see it.
What I miss: not experiencing heartburn? :-)
Sleep: Getting up about once between 2 and 3 to go to the bathroom. Lately I've been waking up during the 4 o'clock hour and not being able to go back to sleep.
Symptoms: Starting to have some lower back soreness, shortness of breath, lots of Braxton Hicks.
Cravings: Nothing lately. Having some aversions due to the heartburn.
Best moment this week: NOT the 3 hour glucose test!
What I am looking forward to: Christmas!

Catching up
So much for keeping up with my weekly updates. I thought I'd get all caught up, and then I'll do my 29 week update at the end. I've been doing ok at making sure to get a picture each week, but when I have Steve do it, it's quite the entertaining experience. Case in point:
My first shower was on the 13th and was a really neat experience. I don't know if I've ever felt so blessed. To know that everyone there was there for the sole reason of blessing our family was amazing. Regina was the hostess and did an incredible job with everything. She did a bird theme that turned out really cute, and she actually gave me some of the decorations to use in Trey's room.
Our 3D/4D ultrasound was on the 18th. Our little Bean was not the most cooperative guy! When we started, he had his arm draped in front of his face, so it was hard to get a good shot of him.
When the tech finally got him to move his arm, the little toot stuck his foot up there!
Trey's been doing a lot less of the light kicking I felt for so long. As things are getting tighter in there, it's turning more into elbows and feet and hiney getting poked out to various places. When he does kick, it almost feels like it could throw me off balance! I told Steve last night that I wish there was a way to remember or document how that feels. Something I could pull out to remind myself later. I love it.
Here's my update for last week.
Pregnancy Highlights:
How Far Along: 29 weeks
Size of baby: Size of a squash. Around 15 inches long and 2.5 - 3 pounds.
Maternity Clothes: Yes! And my hips don't seem to be fitting into them as well lately! What's up with that?! :-)
Gender: BOY!
Movement: Lots of squirming and fidgiting, but he still goes several days at a time when he's really quiet.
What I miss: Feeling him move on his sleepy days. :-) I can't say I really miss much of anything pre-pregnancy.
Sleep: Getting up about once between 2 and 3 to go to the bathroom. Lately I've been waking up during the 4 o'clock hour and not being able to go back to sleep.
Symptoms: Starting to have some lower back soreness, heartburn
Cravings: Nothing lately. Having some aversions due to the heartburn.
Best moment this week: Getting to watch other people feel Trey move. :-)
What I am looking forward to: getting the 3 hour glucose test over and done with! Ha!

It's a ..............
Last Saturday was our big party to share if our Bean is a boy or a girl. Steve and I ran to Fayetteville that morning to pick up our cake and we very pleased with how it turned out!
We got back home right before everyone else arrived (my parents and grandparents actually beat us). There was a bit of debate about whether we should eat first or have dessert first. The cake won. :-) Steve did the honors and cut into the cake, revealing the color..........BLUE!!!!
Our little Bean is a boy! His name is Steven James Welch III, but we will call him Trey. There were a few surprised faces, but of course, everyone was very excited. I think Joey was relieved that he'll be getting a new nephew!
We spent the rest of the afternoon eating a lot of yummy barbecue and visiting. Thank you to all the family and friends who came by to help celebrate our special day!
The Monday after, I took my kids blue cupcakes to share the news with them. I had a bit of a communication break down with the Walmart bakery though in the color of the frosting. I explained that I wanted cupcakes with blue frosting because we had just found out our baby is a boy. In my head, I'm picturing baby blue, but the lady didn't ask, and I didn't specify. When I picked them up Sunday evening, WOW! They were blue! After the kids ate them, their mouths were stained blue, so of course, I had to snap a quick picture. :-)
Since then, I've gotten a variety of books and a very lovely diaper cake from my students. They are so sweet!

The big day!
Yesterday was the big day! We met Mom and Dad at the clinic for the ultrasound, so the room was pretty packed! Steve was running a little later than he planned, but he still made it without missing anything. :-) When the technician got the ultrasound started, the baby was pretty laid back and still, but we could see the head and the mouth moving. Everything went very well, and Bean looks to be a healthy baby! The tech checked a lot of different things. We got to see the four chambers of the heart (159 bpm) and could even see the valves opening and closing. She looked at the brain and told us a lot of the different parts, although I wasn't sure what all the terms were. The face/mouth looked good, as well as the stomach, spine, and tiny feet.
We didn't want to find out the gender during the ultrasound, so we looked away while the technician checked, and after she finished, she put the labeled picture into an envelope. Nobody seemed to trust me with the dvd and the envelope, so Steve took them with him. Since we were heading straight to Rick's Bakery in Fayetteville, we dropped Steve's truck off at the Pilot in Springdale and drove together in my car. When we got to the bakery, I said, "Grab the envelope and let's head inside!" Steve replied, "..........It's in the truck." At this point, it was 5:00, and the bakery closed at 6:00. Since it was rush hour and we were in the middle of Fayetteville, we didn't think we could make it back in time. So, we had to call Dad, who had watched the whole ultrasound and knew the secret. Although it wasn't our original plan, I don't think finding out that news could ever be disappointing!
After we ordered the cake, we ate dinner and did a little bit of shopping. :-) During dinner, Steve tortured his poor mom by teasing her about the news. He was texting her back and forth and FINALLY told her that the baby is a __________. (Have to wait until Saturday!) We found several CUTE outfits and then headed home worn out.
I've watched the ultrasound video about five times and just cannot get tired of it! I'm looking forward to getting to tell family on Saturday and then telling my kids at school on Monday. :-) Look for more pics soon!

Party Time!
One week from today is our party to find out if our little Bean is a boy or a girl. While I am ready for next Saturday to be here soon, our house....not ready.
We finally finished painting the back of the house, a grayish brown in the hallway and our bedroom and a sage green in the baby's room. We painted the doors and trim a cream color and have ordered a dark brown carpet and are waiting for it to arrive at Lowe's. The order was placed Wednesday, and they said it may take up for a week for it to arrive. Soooo, party Saturday, carpet coming in Wednesday??? I am hoping the installer can make it out the next day! I'm trying not to start panicking, but the thought of having a bunch of people over here in a week is a little stressful!
Tuesday is the ultrasound, so I'll post some pictures and details next week. Lots of pictures coming soon!

First "Official" Appointment
I just realized that I never posted about my first official OB appointment. My 10 week appointment was July 20. Mom and Joey came to help Steve and I work in my classroom for the morning, and after meeting Dad at Maria's for lunch, Steve and I headed for the clinic. We checked in and went to the room, and the nurse got the doppler to listen to the baby's heartbeat. Between me not being incredibly far along and the fact that my uterus tilts backwards, she couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler. She said they would just do an ultrasound to check after my exam.
Dr. Martinelli came in and did an exam, and everything was fine. They wheeled in the little ultrasound machine, and she found our little Bean. I was a little worried about how Dr. Martinelli would be as an OB doctor because I'd only seen her a couple of times before, but I was very happy with the appointment that day. She showed us Bean's heartbeat flitting away, and spent a good five minutes trying to get him/her to move around. After a big lunch at Maria's though, I think everyone was ready for a nap!
It was amazing how much things had changed in just the few weeks from my last ultrasound. Before, there wasn't much detail to see. Just the sac and a white blob at the bottom. Well, this time, we could actually see an arm and facial details! Steve said the baby looked more like an alien, but it was just so incredibly amazing to see. My 14 week appointment is next Thursday, and I'm hoping I'll get to set up my ultrasond appointment while I'm there! Hopefully we'll have pictures and a name soon!

The Adventures of Bean: Napping at the Doctor's Office
I went to the Women's Clinic yesterday morning for my appointment with the nurse. My main appointment will be on the 20th, but she just took my family and health histories, gave me an information packet, and sent me to the lab for blood work. This is the third time I've been to this particular lab for blood work, and I've never had any issues anywhere with having blood drawn.
The nurse poked my right arm but had trouble finding the vein. She poked around for a minute and finally got it, but the blood was coming out extremely slowly. She asked another nurse if she should switch arms, and he said it looked like the blood was sticking to the inside of my vein, so she probably should. She had filled one of the four vials, so she grabbed the other three and moved over to my left arm. She poked me again, and this time, it went a lot more quickly.
All of a sudden, I had a wave of nausea, which wasn't too unusual, although I hadn't been feeling sick so far that day. She asked how I was feeling and I told her I was ok but felt a little lightheaded. The lightheadedness got a little worse, and I felt like I wasn't able to speak very well. My vision started to tunnel and go dark, and the next thing I knew, there were two other nurses in front of me, one of whom was holding a pillow. They slid me down to the floor and dragged a chair over and put my feet up. One of the nurses grabbed some bottles of water or something from the fridge and put them on my neck.
After laying there for a few minutes, I felt a little better but was extremely hot. The nurse apparently got two vials out of my left arm, but they still needed one more. After a few more minutes, one of the other nurses got the last vial from my right arm. The first nurse said, "Well, at least you did all that with a sweet smile on your face!" It's good to know I'm pleasant when I try to lose consciousness.
I finally got to sit up and felt good enough to leave, but after I got to my car, I sat for a few minutes before trying to drive. :-) I called Mom on my way to Chick-Fil-A for some food, and she sent Dad over to check on me. He greeted me with, "You're not going to be this much fun for the next seven and a half months, are you?" I really do not want to be "delicate" during this prenancy! Hopefully Bean will get busy with growing and stop causing so much excitement.

Announcing the news
Our original plan to tell our families was to have them come to our house for a special dinner. Steve is quite the planner and was looking forward to the details of the meal, but unfortunately, he is married to an impatient woman who was agonizing over the week long wait for that meal. We went canoeing on Saturday, and I told Regina and Melinda, with the instructions that they couldn't say a WORD until we told our parents that coming Friday. Well, by the time we got back to my parents' house after our float trip, I had talked Steve into telling the parents that evening. Since Dad's 50th birthday was the next day, I told him we had an early birthday present for him, which in hindsight is actually either an extremely late 50th birthday present or extremely early 51st birthday present. Regardless of the details, they were excited! Especially Joey.
The next day, I had some bleeding, so I called again. They told me to come in the following day (Wednesday) to recheck my blood work. It was kind of a long afternoon, but I did a lot of praying and reading my Bible, especially in the Psalms. While I was still a little anxious about everything, I was much more at peace that God was (and is) in control and does everything out of love. I went back in to the doctor at noon the next day and had more blood drawn. By 4:00, I hadn't heard back, so I called the clinic. The nurse said my numbers looked great. In 43 hours, they'd gone from 4900 to 9700. I was so relieved!
Somewhere in all of that, Sunday I think, Steve brought home the first present for the baby. And me, too. :-) In the back is the baby's first book - Goodnight Moon. Does my hubby know me or what?!
After we left Bella Vista, we headed back to Siloam and asked Steve's parents if they wanted to meet us for dinner. We were starving, but his dad was out working late, so we went ahead and grabbed a bite on our own. We ran by La Hacienda and got some chips and salsa afterwards and headed out to his parents' house. His dad wasn't there yet, so we just chatted for a while until he got there. When he got home, Steve went out to the car and got a bag with some bibs we bought and told his mom he found the bag in the yard. Once again: excited parents. :-)
The next day, I started having some spotting in addition to the cramping I had been having since before we found out we were pregnant. It was obviously alarming, so I called the clinic and they told me to come in so they could check. I was nervous about having to go alone, so mom and Joey went with me. Joey's chatter about his video games was a welcome distraction while we waited. :-) The doctor finally came in and did an exam and then sent me over for an ultrasound. The ultrasound didn't pick up a heartbeat, but the technician did see the gestational and yolk sacs and said that everything looked great for that point in the pregnancy. Then I had some lab work done and headed home to rest.
After my appointment on Wednesday, I thought the baby and I could use another treat, so I stopped by Borders. I picked up What to Expect When You're Expecting for myself and got Moo, Baa, La La La and The Going to Bed Book for the baby.

Happy (Early) Father's Day!
The week before school got out, I ran by Target to pick up a little something for Steve for when we found out we were pregnant. I picked up a few onesies and a bib, gift bag, and a Father's Day card. Nice timing for a good card since all the "congrats on your new baby" cards were not quite suited for my hubby. A few days later, I started cramping, so I assumed I wouldn't need the gifts this month and hid them under the bed in the spare room. i was a little bummed, but at least I had it all ready for whenever I needed it.
Fast forward a week. I was still late, so I bought a box of pregnancy tests since we were going canoeing that weekend. I got up Friday at about 6:00 and took a pregnancy test. Immediately, the test line popped up dark, and then the control line faded in.
I was completely NOT expecting that! I ran into the spare bedroom, got the stuff out from under the bed, stuffed the onesies in the bag, stuck the card in, and tossed the test in on top. Poor Steve was still sleeping, but I opened the door, flipped on the light, and plopped the bag on his night stand. He looked up at me sleepily and then at the bag and then back to the grin on my face. I'm sure he had it figured out before he even looked inside. :-)
Since I was bouncing off the walls, we went for a walk before he left for work. After he left, I called the Women's Clinic to see about setting up an appointment. They got me in that afternoon, and surprise, I was pregnant!

Day 6
So I've already missed a day, but we'll just move on. :-)
1. The roads weren't too slick to get to church.
2. Spending a nice, quiet evening at home with my hubby.
3. Chili simmering on the stove and cornbread casserole in the oven. Yum!
4. No housework or laundry to do!
5. A snow day tomorrow!
